Looking at starting a small business on the side, continuing to work Part Time at my job. I am a qualified Graphic Designer with 6 years of education behind me, and really want to work for myself.
So going to start a small design business, and hopefully will be able to quit my job within a year.
Any pointers?
-Where I get Freelance work from
-How I go about setting up a business
-Costs
I am from the UK, so the rules of business will differ from the ones in the US. So answers from UK Graphic Design Freelance businesses only please.
Thankyou
P.S Don’t just put down one sentence with a website attached on ‘How to start a business’. I can google them all myself, just wanted first hand experience and a personal point of view.
Thanks
F**k sake Stephen you spamming c**t. You obviously didnt read the question. If i wanted to submit random designs to get a toupence for putting on mugs i would do so

If you have really good designs and have a mass quantity of them, check out Zazzle.com, there you can post designs and people can buy shirts, cups, plates, basically whatever they want with your graphic designs on them. The greater number of designs you upload to zazzle, the more money you can make
Based on personal experience, one of your best starting points is to contact your local Business Link. They offer free help and advice on starting up. Their free one day course is well worth attending.
The costs of setting up will vary depending on whether you’re going to work from home or rent a studio.
In terms of getting work, it depends on the sort of thing you do. Are you particularly interested in a specific type of design work? Try to break down what you do into solutions for specific types of clients – estate agents, drinks industry, legal firms, as random examples. Then you can make approaches to them saying that you specialise in creating graphics for customers like them.
It could be worth attending some business networking events. Business Link organises some, which would help get you started. Many of them are in the evening so they wouldn’t interfere with your day job.
Good luck!
