Engineering is the single most creative profession. Everything we use is either natural (Mother Nature being the Ultimate Engineer) or engineered. Engineering career success is not based simply on math and science aptitude. The truly successful engineers with whom I have been privileged to work have all possessed intense curiosity, wonder, vision, and imagination. Ive spent nearly 45 years as a practicing engineer, a leader and executive in Industry and Government and as a consultant to high tech companies. As such, Ive been both manager and mentor to thousands of engineers in nearly every discipline. Two years ago I was asked to teach a course in engineering career skills to seniors at UCLA. I found, much to my surprise, that many students lacked the non-technical skills in collaborative teamwork, leadership and communication, which are critical to engineering career success. Furthermore, many also lacked the hands-on orientation and intense intellectual curiosity, which are the hallmark of almost every successful engineer. And, sadly, Ive found this to be a problem that affects students at many of our best Universities. I consider this a tragedy. We need more and better-prepared engineers than we are currently producing. Nationally, we are losing more than a third of engineering students to non-technical courses of study before they graduate.
