I’m looking at a graphic design major in college. But I’m interested enough that I want to get a head start. Is there any online reading you can recommend? Or a particularly educational book on the subject? I’m talking 2D graphics design here, not animation or anything.

There are several books that you might well be using in introductory courses in graphic design. I’d suggest getting a copy of the Meggs’ History of Graphic Design (it’s rather expensive, even used, so you might want to borrow it from a local library).
Other books you would be likely to use are Making and Breaking the Grid, A Typographic Workbook and Typographic Design: Form and Communication.
