So you would use this to design mostly text heavy projects like books, pamphlets, brochures. But you can also use it to arrange any design incorporating text and graphics or just text or graphics.
You cannot create graphics in InDesign. It’s really meant for laying out graphical elements and text.

It is an example of WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) layout application so that the designer only has to place whatever design element on the page in exactly the location he wants without the need of programming, separate typsetting functions and can utilze style sheets to automate much of what other softwares have to do manually.
Along with QuarkXPress, InDesign is the layout application of choice for publisher all over the world. I was trained in Quark, but I prefered Adobe Pagemaker and it’s replacement, InDesign, which I use in my studio.
