I want to double major in marketing and graphic design. The thing is, I’m not sure graphic design is exactly what I want.
I can handle people critiquing me, very easily. I am not a fan of making logos but could do it if asked. I want to focus on things like photo manipulation, and creating something sort of like a digital painting. I don’t want to make random abstract designs with no shade and no tint. I don’t care much for pairing my work with words unless its the thing my work is supposed to be advertising.
I’m very proficient in photoshop. I’ve been drawing for 6 years now, and I’ve been working on photoshop for about 4 years, so I know my way around those programs.
Is graphic design the major I want for this, or would something else fit better? Can you also tell me everything you can about why I wouldn’t or would like graphic design if you think its right for me?

I am a graphic designer in marketing, and no, it does not sound like that is the perfect direction for you. We do very little photo manipulation, we have dtp artists that we hire to do all that. We focus on layouts of magads, shoots, advertising concepts etc.
If you love photoshop, why not look at desktop publishing/photo manipulation? You can easily do something like that as a freelancer and if you ask me, the pay is better than graphic design! You will be sorted if you can get one or two major retailers as clients, they have a constant flow of model shots, jewelery shots, clothing shots etc that needs retouching.
