im teaching myself graphic design..i use gimp and photoshop a good bit..what are some more advanced projects i could do to put in my flickr portfolio. What are people looking for as far as skills for a graphic designer?

Learn about typography, I’m mean really learn it.
learn about pantone colors, the difference between RGB colors and CYMK
projects would be corporate identity. Come up with a logo that can be used for print, web, signs etc. Then make business cards, letterhead, annual report cover, boxes, labels etc.

If you want to be a print designer, you need to learn layout programs. you can download a free trial of Indesign from Adobe.
If you think you might want to just focus on web and images then get the trial of Adobe Flash and Fireworks instead. Also available in student editions.
Lynda.com has a lot of web based tutorials on the programs. If you decide to buy the software get the student editions, it’s a lot cheaper.
typography is a big part of design, regardless of which path you choose. you should probably buy a few good typography books and maybe something on using grids for layout design.
