I do a lot of websites and logo works for clients but I have never designed a t-shirt and have no idea what the going rate would be. It is a somewhat complex design that they plan to sell. Think urbanoutfitters graphic tees.
I charge a flat rate, not hourly fees. Any thoughts on a price quote?

Well if it’s a company as big as the one you think it is… also depends on the time you’ll pass on that design… I’d personnaly charge 200$ Have no idea if it’s too much but listen art is art, they will sell a whole bunch of those t-shirts so…. Good Luck!
Find out the actual rates of a few places that do that and get an idea. Then you’ll want to charge less than them so that clients will use you instead of them. It alsp depends on ow much they want. When they want more, you charge them a little less than the actual price. Try about $5 per shirt. It strongly depends on how much shirts would cost you, too. If a pack costs you $5, charge $5 per shirt and so on. That’s reasonable and you’ll get back more than twice of what you’ve paid.
You have to figure out how much you want to profit. You’ll be surprised at how much people are willing to pay.
I’m not sure why you’d charge a flat rate vs. hourly fees. If a job ends up taking you more time and effort than what the client paid for, you’ve lost a lot of money!
That said, it’s harder to calculate a proper pricing with a flat rate. Here are is a guide from the Graphic Artist’s Guild on basic pricing estimates, and another that offers a free estimate worksheet that you can use. The GAG book, available at any major bookstore, is an excellent source of pricing guidelines for creative types. If you do a lot of freelance work, I’d suggest picking it up.
