If you can make your way around Photoshop, are you probably tech-oriented enough to study graphic design? Thanks.

You definitely have to know your way around the tools of the industry (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, ect.). But being a graphic designer is more than the sum of your proficiency in software. Without training in the principles of design, you’re going to be a sh!tty designer, and if that’s the case, all the software in the world is just going to make your sh!tty designs come out faster.
In any case, no, you don’t need to be technology guru.
Matty B is correct but it really depends on what you are designing. If you intend to design websites, especially with Flash you’re going to have to know a lot of very complex “techie” language like writing code or actionscript. But do to the nature of graphic design and computers the more you know about your tools the better off you’ll be.
Not to mentions knowing computers overall as well. Many graphic design jobs require you to work on a mac. And when your mac crashes control alt delete won’t fix it. You also may have to update your programs or install plug ins. Hot keys are also an essential that you should look into, they make work flow so much quicker. At work we have to log/connect to servers to send different departments our graphics. The more you know the better you’ll be prepared.
