I’m thinking of a career in Graphic Design. What should I expect?
Do you have to be very creative and have a big imagination?

There are all kinds of designers.
Here in Houston the community college offers a two year program that will train you and when you get done you have a diploma.
Our exp is that most of the private schools are more interested in taking a talented persons money more than teaching anything.
You don’t have to take pro classes you can do it yourself. You will need a portfolio. Getting a website to display your work would be extremely helpful.
You can try to pick up some jobs as a freelancer.

This will give you some references which are always helpful.
I wish you good luck in your choice… I never had the talent to draw.. cut and paste I can do.. draw… ROFL.. I can do an apple.
No, it’s not that difficult. You may have some deadlines and you must expect to be working on one thing for quite some time.
I currently am a Web Designer which throws the aspect of Graphics Design in it. For me, it’s not that hard, just time consuming to make something that is perfect.
As long as your patient and work good with people, you can easily be a graphics designer!
Impossible deadlines, crazy & stupid clients, sleepless nights, photoshop nightmares, etc…
Beside that it’s fun :))
I used to do design work for a popular document duplication business that got purchased by a big shipping company. There really isn’t a whole lot of imagination involved, unless you’re creating something for yourself. Customers are usually able to tell you what it is that they want, you just have to create it. I agree with the last poster, there are tons of nightmares that can happen. However, if you know your programs, you can minimize those nightmares. Customers are crazy, very crazy. Let’s just hope you have people skills. You shouldn’t have to worry about finding work there is ALWAYS someone looking for a graphic designer. Whether it be a little known print shop, or a big company.

Brandon
Depends on the company you work for. I’m a designer for a weekly newspaper. It offers a variety of projects (ads, marketing materials and the paper itself) so I don’t get bored. However it is very fast-paced.
Yes, creativity is important. While a client may have an idea of what they want, part of your job is taking that and making it look good.
Expect clients that do not place an appropriate value on your work. Many people don’t understand that there is much, much more to graphic design than placing clip art in a Word document.
Oh, and you can expect wrist pains and eye strain.
But it sure is fun.
