I would like to either go to an art/design school or major in business in college. I enjoy doing graphic design and would like to do that as a career but it pay too well. Being in debt from the art school won’t help much either. Or I could save money and go to a state school major in business and have a better potential salary. Which sounds like the better choice?

As you have discussed, a business major from a state school is a much better choice.
I would consider where your strongest skill set lies. If you are already skilled in graphic design, I would suggest earning a business degree. Business degrees are usually in hot demand, plus they are much more versitle than art degrees. You can go down several different career tracts with a business degree, however, an art degree great limits your potential.
Now if you are looking to school to teach you graphic art skills, that’s a different story. Even still, you can learn graphic art abilities on your own probably better than in a class. And with a business degree you’d have a much easier time getting your foot in the door for a graphics job because you’d bring some unique diversity from an educational perspective.
I would study business first and study GD later, as the role of graphic designer is changing from ‘a person who designs logotypes’ to a biz consultant. A degree in business will be a big plus.
Hi Max
Quite a tough choice!
Look at it from a point of ‘what you like and enjoy doing’…what is your passion.
Is it being creative or business like?
Maybe at the moment you might be looking at the money side as being good in business, but what if later you just don’t love what you are doing…
Ask yourself what do you enjoy the most and run with that…the money will follow.
Some options:
1. You can combine both your design & business skills into running your own design agency or be a freelance designer. You can make it a living.
2. Combine your passion into a income stream like I have done on my own website: http://www.www.createtshirtdesigns.com. I love design and love sharing it!
3. This is how I have created an online business with what I love doing: Check out how I got started: http://www.sitesell.com/your_own_website.html
In the end follow your passion…not so much the money!
Have fun
