If you’re looking in the direction of desiging video games, i believe what you will do for a scope is that you’ll probably be in the design team within the project. using programs like 3dmax, maya, lightwave, whatever software they are using. go for meetings on required designs, what the big boss wants to portray. blah blah, roughly like that.
I am currently on a graphic design course. There is lots of paths you can take from illustration to animation, including game art design for a career. You choose what suits you my friend.
If you like designing graphics, make a member on deviant art its FREE, and show off your samples of your work. They also have a forum and competitions. You will benefit from it, I do.

Are you interested in Graphic Design or Animation? Both are quite different. Graphic Design includes designing packaging, magazine layouts, logo and corporate identity design, and also touches on a bit of advertising – you might design items for a campaign and also do some copywriting, illustration and photography, depending on the amount of money the client is willing to spend, as well as the size of the studio. The sole purpose of Graphic Design is to communicate the unique aspect of the client’s business.
Animation includes character design and gaming – you would tackle things much like Pixar – watch Finding Nemo or other animated films and check out the special sections which show the storyboards they came up with before they even started animating it – they approach it in a similar way to gaming/game design. It is for the sole purpose of having fun. Are you interested in creating graphics found in Spyro or Crash Bandicoot? Or do you want to design items or illustration that communicate a specific thing?
