I’m expecting my first child in December and I’m planning on working from home while I am on maternity leave. I’m wondering what would be the best kind of computer/notebook that is PC based to use Adobe Creative Suite 3 with. As for price I would like to stay under $600 if possible. Any suggestions?

You’ll need something with a fast processor, and an okay videocard. Good luck.
go to ailenware.com or compaq.com
I have had BAD experiences with HP/Compaq. I have a 11 year old Dell desktop that I have spent time and money upgrading myself that has never given me problems. I have heard good things about MAC’s, but you want a PC and I don’t have any personal experience with them (I wish!) There’s Toshiba and a few others.
Hope this helped.
EDIT!
Try looking at Tiger Direct.com it’s an awesome site!
I would go with Dell. You need something with a good bit of memory, and a fast processor. I have never had any problems with Dell, and I have used a Dell computer for many years.
As for a laptop. try the acer 4736z series. i think that’s below the $600 price point. and it’s a dual core laptop with some pretty nifty features. some of which are:
-HDMI port
-2 gig DDR3 Sdram capabilities( faster than the old DDR2 memory.)
-160-320 gig hdd
-a bluray drive option.
-Intel 4500m HD mainstream graphics accelerator.
-more than 3 hours of battery life.
-LED backlit HD LCD display.
-Dedicated media buttons.
-DVD drive.
-floating keys keyboard design.
-powered by either an intel pentium dual core or an intel core2duo processor.
“that’s more than enough to run the adobe creative suite 3.”
CS3 requires a least a 1Ghz CPU with 1GB of RAM, nothing is mentioned of the GPU requirements. To run it smoothly I would double those requirements. I have put a link to a list of $600 computers in the source, I recommend these:
Dell Inspiron 530s
Dell DDDLMB3
I would recommend installing XP on it and wiping Vista though, it will make everything run a lot smoother.
I just bought this – http://www.buy.com/prod/hp-pavilion-dv7-1285dx-entertainment-notebook-2-40ghz-intel-centrino-2/q/loc/101/211107427.html its normally $1800 for $800, check it out.
It all depends on what version of Adobe you are running.
However, there is no way you can find a good laptop or desktop for graphic design purposes for under $600. You should invest in a good laptop for your graphic design needs. I suggest the Dell XPS/Studio line up of computers [laptops/desktops] expect to pay $1,000 – $1,800.
In general, you need the following to have the following regardless of the computer brand:
1) Dual Processor [Intel is possible]
2) 3+ Gigs of Ram
3) Dedicated graphic card [like NVidia]
4) 320+ Hard Drive
I hope my answer was helpfull.
