Give me your opinion. Talking STRICTLY web design here.
Also please don’t harp THAT much on the vector aspect, I use Adobe Illustrator CS3, so unless you see a reason why working with vectors with Fireworks is better than working with them in Illustrator, just keep that minimal.
I’m looking for a compelling argument. Not that you couldn’t make one out of vectors vs. raster, but many people I know will try to simply answer (Fireworks does vectors and bitmap so it’s better) or something silly like that.

I think you’ll find answers in a web designer’s forum.
I don’t know if this will help but here is a Cnet article comparing these types of products: http://reviews.cnet.com/image-editing/adobe-fireworks-cs3/4540-3634_7-32378939-4.html
I had found fireworks easier to learn, but when I wanted to do more complicated things Photoshop worked better for me when I eventually figured it out.
You might find in web design that you or client may have an idea for a graphic. Fireworks could be quicker for basic stuff but you can probably do anything you think of in Photoshop once you figure out how to do it.
My vote is for Photoshop + Photoshop courses or tutorials.
Both of these programs do lots of wonderful things. I like fireworks : it is easier has effective options to use . I like making my .GIF files there ,but not all of the website.
As for me Photoshop is “the man” . This is the program I do all my staff in and trust me Photoshop and Illustrator would be enough to create a wonderful website icons and other staff you may want to use.
