I want to do some freelance work on the side. I have no graphic design education, but would like to take some online courses. Does anyone know any reasonable priced online courses I can take? My main interest is in designing photo announcements. wedding, birth of a child, birthday parties; etc. I understand I can buy photo templates off the internet and just place your photos on them. But I do not want to do that, because I wouldn’t feel like I created it myself. And I’ve always wondered if those one person business owners that sell photo announcements just buy templates, or really make the templates themselves. How would I create my own templates? What would be the absolute best program to buy to do so? Where can I find professional backgrounds, borders and decorative graphics to use to create my announcements? Or what program can I buy or download that would have these things? I’m also interested in getting a Mac book Pro. Is this the right computer for the type of work I want to do? I really want to be the artist of my own work. I hope someone can help me out on here. Thank You All.

I’ve seen many good free InDesign tutorials online. A quick google search will find them.
InDesign is pretty much the industry standard and runs on PC or Mac platforms. There are all sorts of less expensive programs out there depending on your needs. Even Word can be used to design many small projects. It all depends on what level you want to take it to.
