I just started taking classes and have always had a passion for art and so on. As Ive been exploring the details of the job in the aspects of have you have 2-5 years experience in the field to get a good job at a firm. Also it taking 2-3 years to get the degree which would make me at least 31. I dunno you think employers would look at me as a joke ?

heck no! that’s a perfectly fine age:)
enjoy your career!!:D
lol. No.
I’m 23 and I’ve been a graphic designer for three years at a small printing company in northern Virginia. I sit next to another artist who is 40 and started seven years ago. My boss -hates- twenty somethings because he thinks we have no work ethic (in many cases, I must agree).
If you have a good portfolio and know your programs you shouldn’t have any trouble. You’d be wise to get rid of your self-doubt now though, because art is subjective and not everyone is going to think highly of what you do. Good luck.
No it wouldn’t be too late. Firms say 2-5 years experience to keep out entry level people. You will have to sell yourself and have to make a portfolio of your works while you are in college to show employers your capabilities, but don’t let what they have listed on monster and jobing prevent you from pursuing your career.
I have a similar dilemma. I’ll be 27 this year, and I almost majored in graphic design in college, but didn’t because I didn’t think it would pay enough or offer significant advancement opportunities. Now that I’ve been out of college for nearly 4 years I’m finding that I probably would have been much better off working in that field all this time rather than spending my twenties alternating between part-time, low-paying jobs and unemployment with my Media Studies/Video Production degree. I see job openings all the time for graphic design positions, and the pay seems to be acceptable for a young, single person, but what about years down the road when you need more money?
If anyone with the appropriate knowledge and experience happens to read this, I’d like to add the following question; what is the long-term outlook for this kind of work as far as salary and advancement opportunities?
28 is not too late. I work with freelancers who are in their late 60′s. If you have talent, no one will look at your age. It may be frustrating at first to get started, but you can promote very quickly if your are in the right company. Once you become a designer, you will need to continue to re-invent and educate yourself. This profession is constantly and quickly changing. Money is good and there is always a huge demand for graphic designers. If you have interest, i’d recommend getting into web animation, web design, mobile applications design. Many jobs in this area.
