Are ‘quotes’ in graphic design necessary?

I’ve been looking at the graphic design business and I’ve seen almost all of the place from professional to amateur offer a ‘free quote’. Maybe I’m just projecting here, but this concept just seems a tad pretentious. I mean making graphics on a digital program isn’t something you really need to quote, heck it isn’t even something one should charge for; it’s almost too easy to create an uninspired piece of vector art these days and most companies do. Fireworks CS3 vs Photoshop CS3 for web-design?

Give me your opinion. Talking STRICTLY web design here. Also please don’t harp THAT much on the vector aspect, I use Adobe Illustrator CS3, so unless you see a reason why working with vectors with Fireworks is better than working with them in Illustrator, just keep that minimal. I’m looking for a compelling argument. Not that you couldn’t make one out of vectors vs. raster, but many people I know will try to simply answer (Fireworks does vectors and bitmap so it’s better) or something silly like that.

When you create an art portfolio should the picture of your work fill the frame?

I have to create an art portfolio for a graduate program, my undergrad did not require it so it is my first time. I have done a graphic design portfolio but this is different to me. When I take pictures of my work should i have the painting or photograph fill the entire frame or have it up against a background hanging against a white or black wall? Thank you so much.

i’m only 14 but i’m thinking of going into the graphic design business when i am older ,every piece of paper i get i always draw on it random stuff that i have no idea what they are i draw all over my school equipment and i cant stop its very addictive and i like doing it,so…how well would be payed for graphic designing
