For many years, web developers were forced to rely solely on third party plugins like Flash and Java in order to create reliable, interactive animations for web pages. Using an external plugin has its disadvantages, as most search engine spiders cannot crawl content made to run in an applet which made SEO impossible, and sometimes applets could cause older generations of computers to perform slowly and make a page instantly unattractive to a potential browser.
