This was an interesting file. It was weird enough when we discovered that we could often recover or fix bad or corrupted Adobe InDesign files with, get this, QuarkXPress and the Markzware plugin ID2Q (And then once in Quark, bring back via Q2ID within InDesign.)- then we ran into this one. A customers file who seemed to be recovered via this method and then CRASH in Quark… Luckily in QuarkXPress 8 they have a feature which saves the file when Quark is crashing and places it in a folder called “QuarkRescueFolder” on your desktop.…

The layout file had an Adobe InDesign CS3 icon and the proper “.iNDD” file extension yet would not open in CS4, CS3 or quite frankly anything Adobe! Why? Because, as it turned out, it was really a QuarkXPress layout and a version 5.01 file at that! The customer though it was a corrupt InDesign job. No, it was not my file format x-ray vision that told me that, but FlightCheck Professional from Markzware. And with the help of Q2ID (Quark to InDesign) I was able to get this customers file converted into an InDesign…
