When you create an art portfolio should the picture of your work fill the frame?

I have to create an art portfolio for a graduate program, my undergrad did not require it so it is my first time. I have done a graphic design portfolio but this is different to me. When I take pictures of my work should i have the painting or photograph fill the entire frame or have it up against a background hanging against a white or black wall? Thank you so much.
